These\nconservancies are crucial rewilding initiatives outside India\u2019s Protective Area\nNetwork. They are grounded in the belief that communities living near\nbiodiverse areas should be the primary beneficiaries and protectors of these\nregions. The initiative aims to expand and enhance wildlife habitats by\nencouraging local communities to revert their marginal and failed farms to\ntheir natural wild state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What makes\nthis project appealing to local communities is that they retain ownership of\nthe land, which transforms into biodiverse refuges. These refuges promise\nstable livelihoods and economic security in the face of climate change. COCOON\nConservancies also act as buffers, absorbing biodiversity from protected core\nareas and reducing human-animal conflict. Positioned in corridors, these\nconservancies help widen and refresh the gene pool of wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Umred\nKarhandla Paoni Wildlife Sanctuary is an ideal location for such a project.\nThis sanctuary serves as a crucial passage for wildlife between the\nNagzira-Navegaon, Bor, and Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserves. Tigers often traverse\nthrough Umred, with some establishing residence while others pass through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nlandscape, with over 100 acres of marginal or lost farmlands between critical\ntiger habitats and a water source, affected by the Gosikhurd Reservoir, was\nperfect for the conservancy. Water chestnut and shrimp farms were established\nto support local farmers. The reservoir is also a haven for birders and\nwildlife enthusiasts.
