The Hemis Festival in Ladakh, celebrated annually on the 10th day of the Tse-Chu in the Lunar month according to the Tibetan Calendar, is also known as Hemis Tsechu. This two-day celebration marks the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava and is a vibrant display of Ladakhi culture. Hemis Monastery, the largest in Ladakh, is beautifully adorned for the occasion, showcasing the region’s exquisite handicrafts. The festival’s highlight is the masked dance, known as ‘Chham Dance,’ symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. Visitors can also enjoy the vibrant local drink, Chhang, and witness the grand display of the largest thangka of Guru Padmasambhava every 12th year.
