Bhutan’s Department of Tourism introduces a supportive initiative for the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector by waiving the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) for event organizers. Effective immediately, eligible MICE events with a minimum of seven participants can apply for the SDF waiver for up to four nights, excluding travel days. The waiver is applicable throughout the year and must be applied for at least one month before the event through a provided online form. The initiative aims to boost the MICE market, benefiting local businesses and event venues. Organizers must be DOT-certified, and accompanying partners and friends are not eligible for the waiver. Additionally, a comprehensive report must be submitted to the Department of Tourism within one month after the event. The SDF, a daily contribution by tourists for Bhutan’s development, supports healthcare, education, environment, culture, and the economy. As a carbon-neutral nation, Bhutan uses the SDF to maintain its forest cover and carbon neutrality. The SDF rate was previously reduced by 50% until August 31, 2027, with special rates for children.
