Janmashtami marks the birth of Lord Krishna – the beloved deity who is considered to be a warrior, teacher and philosopher by Hindus. While some choose to fast on the day, others celebrate by singing songs in praise of Krishna and cooking his favourite dishes at home. Temples come alive with Krishna worship as little idols of Krishna in his childhood are placed inside cradles and rocked gently to the chant of religious hymns and mantras. Krishna is one of the most significant deities in the Hindu pantheon, and as such Janmashtami is an important festival, celebrated with much fervour and love across the country.
