Baisakhi – The Harvest Festival

The harvest festival of India, Baisakhi marks the beginning of the Sikh New Year and signifies the harvest of love, happiness, joy and prosperity. Celebrations are marked with family get-togethers, home-made Punjabi delicacies, and the famous folk-dances of Bhangra and Gidda.

What’s Special: The state of Punjab, particularly Amritsar, come alive during this period with melas (or local fares) organized as a lead-up to the day. These are great to explore local life and culture in the most vibrant and festive of settings. Locals dress up in their finest; stalls sell beautiful local crafts; lip-smacking food goes around; and several fun activities keep one entertained, from acrobats and mock fights to folk performances.
