The auspicious 9-day festival of Navratri ends with a bang of celebrations on Dussehra. An extravaganza of traditions and customs, Dussehra marks the victory of good over evil, represented through the mythical story of Lord Rama who defeated the evil king Ravana. Local fares sprout up in cities and villages alike, accentuated with towering effigies of Ravana, that are burnt at dusk. Colourful plays on Lord Ram’s life, called Ramlila, are also enacted in many places.
