The tourism department will soon grant heritage status to Fort Kochi and Mattancherry in Kochi (Kerala). The two destinations have been the mainstay of tourism in the district and were declared heritage conservation zones three decades ago.
The heritage town tags will help conserve heritage structures and upgrade current infrastructure in the area.
Referring to this, Tourism Director mentioned that the existing heritage structures in Mattancherry and Fort Kochi will be conserved on the lines of the Muziris Heritage project, which documents the 1000-year-old history of Muziris town.
He also stated that the project will include history related to Portuguese, Dutch, English and other foreigners who came to these lands and left their mark here.
