Google and the Ministry of Railways have launched a new project to preserve the cultural heritage of Indian Railways.
Available on the Google Arts & Culture website and app, “The Railways-Lifeline of a Nation” is a virtual museum that celebrates the rich history of India’s vast railway network through a collection of over 3000 images and 150 videos.
From the mountain rails in the Nilgiris to the local trains in Delhi, one can explore several routes. Rail enthusiasts will particularly enjoy the detailed route maps from the archives, an out-of-date collection of railway timetables and scenes from pre-independence life in India’s railway colonies.
Meanwhile, this virtual railway museum has something that you wouldn’t find anywhere else. The trackmen, the engineers, the station masters and superintendents—stories of the men and women who keep the trains running all over the country.
Also, on offer are 360-degree views of several trains, like the Jodhpur Royal Saloon, the Calcutta Tram, the Himalayan Princess Train, and more.
