You may have heard about the floods in the Southern Indian state of Kerala. The region is a key tourist destination and is one of the most beautiful parts of India.
In mid-August 2018, severe flooding affected Kerala due to unusually high rainfall during the monsoon season. It was the worst flooding in Kerala in nearly a century. Around 350 people died and many missing, and around a million people were forced into temporary camps. One-sixth of the total population of Kerala had been directly affected by the floods and related incidents. The Indian government had declared it a Level 3 Calamity or ‘Calamity of a severe nature’. Kerala is estimated to have suffered damages of nearly $3 billion , which analysts say could rise ten-fold as waters recede and flood recovery begins — from clean-up and reconstruction to restoring livelihoods for farmers who lost land and crops.
The rains has subsided and now the clean-up process has begun. This is an extensive task with the damage to many homes and facilities being severe. Indians are a resilient people and we have gone through may disasters and adversities and picked ourselves up and started all over again. This time will be no different.
There has been no significant damage to tourism infrastructure. Hotels in Kumarakom, Alleppey area did have water logging but things are cleaning up, Roads to Munnar have had serious damage. Periyar hotels are unaffected. Major routes are functioning well. The incident happened in the shoulder period of the tourist season, so we have some time to work on recovery in time to welcome tourists for the high season.
At this stage we at Creative Travel have no guests in harms way. It is a bit early to plan for any rescheduling for future trips, but we expect any changes to be minimal as the areas visited by our guests are not as badly affected.
