26th January honours the date on which the constitution of India came into effect in 1950; bringing to life the tenets of the world’s largest democracy and completing the country’s transition towards becoming an independent republic. The day is observed as a national holiday across India.

The day is marked by the Republic Day parade which commences from the gates of the president’s residence, Rashtrapati Bhavan and showcases India’s defence capabilities, culture and social heritage. Representatives of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force and traditional dance troupes take part in the parades. Awards and medals of bravery are given to the people from the armed forces and also to civilians.
