Makar Sankranti – The End of the Winter Solstice

Celebrated the day after Lohri, Makar Sankranti is a day dedicated to the Sun God, marking the transition of the sun into a new phase and the end of the month with the winter solstice, considered the darkest night of the year.

What’s Special: This is one of the few ancient festivals celebrated by Hindus as per the solar cycle, and hence falls on the same day each year, as per the Gregorian calendar – 14th January. People wear new clothes and savour homemade delicacies which are usually made of jaggery, gur and til.
